Offer Description

SIMaP (Science and Engineering of Materials and Processes Laboratory - UMR CNRS / UGA / Grenoble INP - UGA) brings together over 200 people. The unit is a global leader in physical metallurgy, thermodynamics, and process engineering, located at the heart of UGA (ranked 1st French institution in metallurgical engineering).

This postdoctoral project is part of an international partnership with the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta (Canada), a world-class institution (Global Top 100) renowned for its innovation hub in materials and process research.

Study the precipitation kinetics of TiN in HSLA steels during Year 1 (UGA) using SIMaP's electromagnetic levitation (EML) facility.

Conduct a series of solidification experiments on EML and perform preliminary microstructural characterization of samples (optical microscopy, SEM, EBSD).

Calibrate the optical system for in situ surface observation of samples and real-time monitoring of phase transformation velocity.

Adapt and modify the cooling system to precisely control solidification rates.

Develop a coupled numerical model integrating electromagnetic fields, heat and mass transfer, and solidification (asset / a plus).

Pursue the research during Year 2 (University of Alberta) by dissolving the matrix of the EML-solidified samples.

Conduct directional solidification experiments at the University of Alberta and analyze the resulting structures.

Compare the results obtained under terrestrial conditions with microgravity data (subject to availability).

Write technical documentation, scientific reports, and manuscripts for international peer-reviewed journals.

Position Constraints / Job Requirements

Full-time position involving mandatory international mobility: Year 1 based at SIMaP (Grenoble, France) and Year 2 based at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada).

Qualifications & Skills Required

Proven experience in experimental research (experience in alloy processing or metallurgy is a strong asset).

Solid fundamental knowledge of heat and mass transfer processes (diffusion, conduction, convection, radiation).

Proficiency in complex scientific image processing and data analysis.

Expertise in metallic sample preparation and characterization techniques (optical microscopy, SEM, EBSD).

Fluency in written and spoken scientific English (essential for a bilingual environment and international mobility).

Strong passion and enthusiasm for experimentation, as well as developing and upgrading test benches.

Autonomy, excellent organizational skills, and agility to switch between experimental work and modeling tasks.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills to collaborate effectively within two international teams.

Scientific curiosity, analytical mindset, and ability to quickly assimilate new knowledge.

Required Professional Experience

2 to 5 years of experience (including Ph.D. research).

Education / Academic Degree

Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Process Engineering, or Materials Physics.
