We are seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to support civil engineering and construction activities for the EPR2 nuclear power plant project at Penly, France. The role will involve ground investigation, geotechnical design review, construction monitoring and technical reporting, with particular focus on groundwater management, slope stability and settlement conditions at this coastal nuclear project site.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, supervise and review ground investigations, including boreholes, Cone Penetration Tests (CPTs), trial pits and laboratory testing.
- Interpret ground investigation results and maintain the geotechnical ground model and design parameters for the project site.
- Update the ground model as new investigation data becomes available and identify deviations from original design assumptions.
- Review and verify geotechnical designs for foundations, retaining structures, excavations and temporary works.
- Assess settlement, bearing capacity, slope stability and groundwater conditions in accordance with Eurocode 7 requirements.
- Review contractor designs and method statements relating to earthworks, dewatering and ground improvement activities.
- Inspect excavations, formation levels, fill placement and compaction activities to ensure compliance with project specifications.
- Assess unforeseen ground conditions and provide practical, technically justified and documented recommendations to the construction team.
- Prepare factual and interpretative geotechnical reports, inspection records and non-conformance reports.
- Maintain accurate and traceable technical documentation in line with the quality and compliance requirements of a nuclear construction project.
- Present geotechnical findings, technical assessments and recommendations to civil engineering teams, designers and client representatives.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering and construction teams to address geotechnical challenges and support safe project execution.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, preferably within large infrastructure, coastal or industrial civil engineering projects.
- Strong knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, soil mechanics and ground investigation methodologies.
- Knowledge of settlement analysis, bearing capacity, slope stability, groundwater management and dewatering systems.
- Experience with construction monitoring and geotechnical instrumentation, including piezometers, inclinometers and settlement monitoring systems.
- Ability to interpret monitoring data and recommend appropriate corrective actions for unforeseen ground conditions.
- Experience reviewing earthworks, ground improvement and compaction activities against technical specifications.
- Familiarity with geotechnical analysis and modelling software such as PLAXIS or equivalent tools.
- Strong technical reporting, documentation, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively with construction teams, designers, contractors and client representatives.
- Understanding of quality assurance and documentation requirements within highly regulated construction environments.
- Professional proficiency in English is essential.
