Offer Description
Blue phases have been shown to be promising systems for applications based on interactions with light, such as display-type applications. These liquid-crystal blue phases hold the great promise of much faster transitions than the liquid crystals generally used in displays. However, their temperature window remains very small, and the aim of this post-doctoral project will be to understand how to stabilize these blue phases through the insertion of nanoparticles, as well as to understand how these nanoparticles will modify the structures and properties of the blue phases
The goal will be to stabilize liquid-crystal blue phases through the insertion of nanoparticles, mainly gold and magnetic nanoparticles, the idea being to understand, over the course of this post-doctoral project, how the temperature window of these blue phases can be widened and how their properties are modified. The activities will mainly involve physico-chemistry for sample preparation, optical microscopy and spectroscopy, and X-ray scattering, all possibly under magnetic field or optical illumination.
The work will take place in a group that is part of the Physico-chemistry and dynamics of Surfaces team at INSP. The group includes a senior researcher (research director) and three PhD students, and works with several engineers. There will be an important handover period to learn how to handle the systems with a final-year PhD student.
Expertise in optical microscopy and spectroscopy, in handling liquid crystals, and, if possible, in X-ray scattering, with expected skills in the use of computer tools for data analysis.
