On-site recruitment. The postdoctoral researcher will be hosted by the UAR 3123, the Centre for Economic, Legal and Social Studies and Documentation (CEDEJ), in Cairo, Egypt. The CEDEJ will provide the necessary working facilities, including office space, library access, and fieldwork missions.
The TRANSMITT project investigates the circulation of money between migrant and non-migrant communities in countries of the Global South. Drawing on a “follow the money” methodology, it develops a multi-sited approach to migrant remittances, focusing on the social and material infrastructures that make these transfers possible. It seeks to analyze the social relationships generated by these exchanges through three main perspectives. First, sending money involves various actors (migrants, families, intermediaries) and connects different places, shaping a transnational migration field. Second, the study of formal and informal channels provides an opportunity to examine how migrants and non-migrants relate to politics, particularly through issues of trust in the state and resistance to formalization and taxation. Finally, attention to the values associated with transfers sheds light on social aspirations that materialize through the local reinvestment of remittances. By bringing together labor migration and forced migration, and tracing these human and monetary flows between Egypt, Sudan, and the Gulf countries, TRANSMITT seeks to move beyond spatial and social boundaries in migration studies and contribute to a renewed analysis of remittances, understood not only as an economic phenomenon but also as a social and political infrastructure.
The candidate must hold a PhD in geography.
The ability to work collaboratively in a collective and interdisciplinary environment while conducting independent research will be a key criterion in the assessment of applications.
Skills in cartography and geomatics are desirable.
Excellent written and spoken proficiency in French and English is essential, and proficiency in Egyptian Arabic is required for fieldwork.
